Program Description

Join us at Kitt Peak to celebrate our universal heritage of dark night skies and learn how darkness at night benefits human culture, human health, and the environment.  This program runs in conjunction with International Dark Sky Week and the Globe at Night citizen-science campaign from March 31 to April 6.  Attend a presentation to learn about the effects of light pollution and what you can do to reduce it and preserve our natural night sky.  Learn how to use a sky-quality meter to determine the brightness of the night sky above Kitt Peak and your home.  Then submit your findings to Globe at Night, using you smart phone, tablet, or computer and join citizen scientists around the globe in raising the awareness of light pollution.  Conclude the celebration with telescope viewing of wondrous deep-sky and solar system objects in the beautiful night sky above Kitt Peak.

This program is intended for guests age 14 and older.  The smaller group enables you to have extensive interaction with your guide, and experience more views through the eyepiece.

A group orientation and light supper begin the evening and are followed by sunset viewing. After sunset, you will proceed to one of the visitor center observatories, apart from the regular Nightly Observing Program guests, where your Dark Sky Celebration will begin.

The weather on Kitt Peak is approximately 10 -20 degrees cooler than in Tucson so wear layers.  Most of this program is outdoors or in an observatory, which is not heated.  This particular observatory is not wheelchair accessible.

COST: $75.00per person if reservations are made online; $80 if reservations are made by phone.  No discounts are available.

Advanced reservations are required and can be made here.
