Program Description

With excitement building to a fever pitch in advance of the much anticipated August 21st total solar eclipse, now is the perfect time to learn about our Sun and how to safely observe it.

Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center is pleased to announce an exciting new half-day safe solar observing public class that will focus on the most dynamic object in our solar system, the Sun.

Learn about the Sun as a star, solar cycles, effects on the Earth and spacecraft, and of course, the “Great American Eclipse of 2017”. The class will instruct participants on safe solar observing techniques with the naked-eye and various other optical instruments. Weather permitting, participants will observe the Sun using the two Razdow Solar Telescopes. Join us in the spectacular setting of Kitt Peak National Observatory for a day of fun in the Sun. Since the observatory will not be open to the public during the week of the eclipse, join us now to learn where to go for the best views of the event of a lifetime. Don’t be left in the shade!
